“Understanding Addiction as a Family: Finding Hope and Support”

Before my daughter’s addiction, I knew very little about recreational drugs. Although she was living with me, I did not recognise the signs and symptoms of cocaine and ketamine use. Looking back, I now realise that her addiction had been present for around two years before I became aware of it. I was simply very naïve because I had never been exposed to drugs growing up. I didn’t mix in circles where drug use was common, nor had I witnessed any of my friends using drugs, so I had no understanding of what addiction looked like or how to recognise it in someone I loved.

Everything changed when my daughter was admitted to hospital following an overdose. It was one of the most frightening experiences of my life, and it was at that point we were introduced to Red Rose Recovery.

From the moment we walked through the doors, we were welcomed without judgement. We were treated with kindness, compassion, and understanding. Instead of focusing on what had happened, the team focused on hope and showed us that recovery was possible.

I was determined to support my daughter throughout her recovery, but I quickly realised that I also needed educating. We attended the weekly sessions together whenever possible, and they became invaluable to both of us. The sessions helped us understand addiction, recognise triggers, develop healthier coping strategies, and appreciate the science behind drug dependence. Learning about dopamine and how cocaine affects the brain helped us understand why addiction is so powerful, while also teaching us healthier ways to experience pleasure and reward through everyday activities.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Red Rose Recovery was hearing from people with lived experience of addiction. They openly shared their own journeys, the challenges they had faced, and the strategies that had helped them maintain their recovery. Their honesty, resilience, and willingness to help others gave us both hope during an incredibly difficult time.

Before attending Red Rose Recovery, I was afraid of people who were homeless or struggling with addiction because I simply did not understand their circumstances. Through the programme, my perspective completely changed. I came to understand that many people living with addiction are incredibly intelligent, caring individuals whose lives have been shaped by trauma, loss, or difficult experiences. Addiction does not define who they are.

My daughter and I have both made genuine friendships through Red Rose Recovery and have always felt supported by the staff, volunteers, and other members. The sense of community is unlike anything I have experienced before. We have never felt judged, only encouraged, accepted, and given hope.

Red Rose Recovery has not only helped my daughter on her recovery journey, but has also transformed my own understanding of addiction. It has given me the knowledge, confidence, and tools to support my daughter in the best possible way. For that, I will always be grateful.

If you are reading this and need support, please take that first step today and contact Red Rose Recovery. You will be met with kindness, understanding, and a team ready to help you move forward. You do not have to face this alone.

Thank you to everyone at Red Rose Recovery for the compassion, education, and hope you have given our family. Your work changes lives, and we will never forget the support you have shown us.

Warmest regards,

A Mother and Daughter
